Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Community Ecology / Spatial Ecology

Position details

A fully funded, three-year postdoctoral position in community ecology and spatial ecology is available at the University of Melbourne.

Full details of the position, including selection criteria and application instructions, are available via the University of Melbourne job advertisement: here (applications close 23 June 2026).

Project description

This position contributes to a research program focused on understanding the assembly rules that govern biodiversity in ecological communities. The work combines field-based experiments in coastal systems with quantitative and theoretical approaches, with an emphasis on linking empirical observations to ecological mechanisms.

A central component of the position is a large-scale, field-based experimental program in intertidal environments. This involves leading the implementation of field-based research, from experimental setup through to data collection and synthesis, and developing research outputs arising from the project.

Time between fieldwork is typically spent on data analysis, modelling, writing, and mentoring students. There is also scope to contribute to complementary projects and to develop independent research directions within the broader framework of the program.

Requirements

Applicants should have a PhD in ecology or a related field, with strong experience in field-based ecological research and quantitative analysis. The position would suit candidates who are able to take ownership of projects, carry them through to completion, and engage with both empirical data and ecological ideas. Experience in marine or intertidal systems is desirable but not essential.
